Sometimes it’s bad to use a given format. I should put all the poetry I’ve been reading in the same entry. Anyway, it’s the easiest way to avoid spam and other daily maintenance trivia.

I don’t think I am qualified to speak anything about Derek Walcott—I am not really into postcolonialism, nor am I into poetry. Though I’ve met him once in Taiwan.🙂 He came for a speech. Very intelligent, funny, charismatic guy. The best speech I’ve ever had is like that, once you started listening to it, you are enthralled into his worlds with one story after another. It’s like Arabian nights; full of allegories of dolphins, islands, numerous countries, five continents and endless modern intellectual debates.

The other speech I’ve listened to similar to this one is from another poet Yang Mu. I remember when I was so enjoyed in the journey he took me with, there are plenty of other audience fell sound asleep right in their cozy chairs. They are indeed mesmorizing experiences, working in different ways with different people.

My spiritual diet is seriously biased that I barely spend any time with something there’s no “characters" for me to indentify with. Yes, character, and I always look for dramatic elements in anywhere I could look into. This poem is dramatic enough, and the narrator is a wanderer, starts from a train from Pennsylvenia to—-rest of the America, Zermatt, Spain and the other parts of the world you’ve ever been to or will never go. For me it’s fascinating enough to read someone writes his travelogue in a form of poetry, and it is definitely more than a physical grand tour.

Some reviews here:

New York Times

Time Online

Barnes and Noble

And Isidore Okpewho writes a paper named: Walcott, Homer, and the “Black Atlantic.
