5X2

Writing about web page http://www.francois-ozon.com/anglais/index2.html

It’s a simple and straighforward love story, only he tells it in backwards. I knew the synoposis and the idea earlier last year and always wanted to see it. Almost wanted to catch it at London International Festival. Of course I couldn’t, it’s a soldout.

What intrigues me is Ozon uses Latin style music when his two beautiful actor/actress walked through the hallway, either in hotels, or in hospital. Love story, Latin music, does it remind of you “In the Mood of Love?

  1. In the mood for love, I guess.

    COMMENT:

A.O Scott of the New York Times was not thrilled about “5X2″. My irrational response to this kind of review is always one that snores at American critic’s lack of Frankcophile sensibility. But, maybe this Ozon plays more gimmicky than pulling off something creative. (8 Femmes is just terrific because it’s so entertaining and then there is Swimming Pool. I sign on to it with no hesitation whatsoever.) 5X2 is now in the theater. Do I go see it or not?

    COMMENT:

yes, go to see it. Ozon is smart and whimsical about his projects. He has the luxury to switch from generes. He’s spoiled. Never expect what he’ll do for his next film. I like this one. He keeps being smart, but not showing off to many gimmicks like those broken narrations we’ve seen in “new American films" these days. Put it in this way, it’s a story that will linger in your mind after walking out of the theatre. I thought it’s the best tester to try if it is good or not.
