Actually this guys is so popular in Taiwan. We never miss any of his books, one after another, from Norweigian Woods to Kafka on the Shore to After Dark this January. Everyone has something to say on him. We have various colums, forums, and everything online for him. Right after six months of the release of his new books, we could anticipate there would be a play adapted from it. Even his translator, is another literature phenomenon. She really builds up her own literary style which I could say influence Japanese literature translation or even Chinese literature later on. Back in college, he is just very much like a common sense for a literature major student like me.

Though I did enjoy the reading. It’s pretty rare in the present day you encountered a book that would make you forget everything and just let yourself immersed in it. I was really busy analyzing different stuff all the time, but I do remember the experience I read Norweigian Woods. You will forget time, your weary eyes, the place you put yourself in, just want to hang on there to see what happened next.

I grew older then realized it’s the very best storytelling techniques that he has. (Though there are lots of reason, okay, I better stop from here…) Those are the things we could only witness from the very best creative minds alive. I never imagine a book of such would someday influence my own life in some unexpected, magical way.

Murakami is having his 56th birthday today. The latest Chinese version After Dark hit the market by preselling three thousand copies in two days. Definitely will get one next week when I get back there, to sit in the late night cafe at the 24/7 bookstore, I do miss that.

    COMMENT:

Yes, the most readable fictions are always created by genius. I wonder when will be the After Dark get translated into English. It’s still a good read.
